Standards for becoming a foster family

famille d'accueilTo be able to foster one or more children, the foster family must meet certain standards:

  • You may live alone, as a family or as a couple.
  • You must have no criminal record.
  • Your recognition as a resource must not have been suspended or revoked in the last three years.
  • You must not have had recourse to a law regarding insolvency in Canada in the last three years.
  • You must hold valid, recognized CPR and general first-aid training.
  • You must have a safe living environment that meets and respects the building code and fire safety laws as well as all municipal regulations for your area. As well, the space must meet cleanliness standards.
  • You must be aged over 18 and hold Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.
  • You must have the physical space to foster a child, based on certain standards of safety, hygiene and comfort.
  • You must provide common areas in sufficient number and tailored to various everyday life activities.
  • You must have a room measuring at least 80 square feet, with a window and furniture appropriate to the child’s needs.
  • You must have good budget-management skills.
  • You must be available for the child who is entrusted to you.
  • You must have the skills to act as an “accompanying parent” in partnership with the Youth Centre.
